Terms of Service
1. Acceptance of these terms
These Terms of Service govern your use of rebelliousaging.org and your participation in Rebellious Aging chapters, sessions, and activities. They are provided by Rebellious Aging, referred to here as "we," "us," or "our." By accessing this website or taking part in any Rebellious Aging activity, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the site or take part in our activities.
2. About Rebellious Aging
Rebellious Aging is a network of member-led chapters that offers in-person activities, educational sessions, books, and a self-assessment focused on healthy aging. Using this website, submitting a form, or attending a session does not by itself create a membership, a service agreement, or any other relationship beyond what these terms describe. Any membership terms, dues, or chapter agreements are provided to you separately.
3. Use of this website
You may use this website for lawful purposes, to learn about Rebellious Aging, and to inquire about or take part in our activities. You agree not to:
- Use the site in a way that violates any applicable law or regulation
- Attempt to gain unauthorized access to the site, its servers, or any connected systems
- Introduce malware, or interfere with the normal operation or security of the site
- Copy, scrape, or republish site content for commercial purposes without our written permission
- Submit false, misleading, or fraudulent information through any form on the site, including first-visit bookings and chapter applications
We may restrict or suspend access to the site at any time, without notice, if we reasonably believe use of the site breaches these terms.
4. Not medical advice
Rebellious Aging does not provide medical care. The content on this website, in our books and podcasts, and at our lectures, journal clubs, and chapter sessions is general educational information. It is not medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment, and it is not a substitute for care from a qualified health professional who knows your history.
No doctor-patient or other professional relationship is created between you and Rebellious Aging, Dr. Robert Peterson, any lecturer, coach, chapter lead, or volunteer through your use of this website or your participation in our activities. Information about tests, screenings, supplements, or medications is provided so you can discuss it with your own physician. Do not start, stop, or change any medication or treatment based on anything you read or hear through Rebellious Aging without first speaking to your physician.
Always seek the advice of your physician with any question about a medical condition, and never disregard professional medical advice or delay seeking it because of something you read or heard through Rebellious Aging. If you think you may have a medical emergency, call 911 or your local emergency number immediately.
5. The self-assessment
The self-assessment on this website is an educational tool. It is not a medical test, a diagnosis, or a substitute for an examination by a health professional. Its results depend entirely on the answers you give, are not reviewed by any person, and may not reflect your actual health. Do not rely on your results to make medical decisions without speaking to your physician.
The self-assessment is sponsored by Athena Clinic. How the self-assessment handles your answers is described in ourPrivacy Policy.
6. Athena Clinic and disclosure of interest
Athena Clinic is a separate medical practice owned by Dr. Robert Peterson, who is also the founder of Rebellious Aging. Athena Clinic sponsors the self-assessment, and this website links to services offered by Athena Clinic. Dr. Peterson has a financial interest in Athena Clinic. You are never required to use Athena Clinic to take part in Rebellious Aging, and the information on this website can be used with any physician you choose.
Any assessment, session, consultation, package, test, or other service provided by Athena Clinic is offered solely by Athena Clinic, under its own terms, patient policies, and privacy practices, and not by us. Athena Clinic alone decides which of its services, if any, are offered at no charge, who is eligible, what is included, and what fees apply. Any mention on this website of an Athena Clinic service or offer, including one described as free or complimentary, is general information only, may change or end at any time without notice, and does not create a commitment by us.
Before booking, confirm directly with Athena Clinic what a service includes, whether any charge applies, and whether your insurance covers it. We are not responsible for Athena Clinic's services, fees, billing, insurance determinations, scheduling, or any other matter between you and Athena Clinic.
7. Chapters, sessions, and activities
Rebellious Aging chapters are run largely by members and volunteers. Session schedules, locations, leaders, speakers, and formats may change or be cancelled at any time, including because of weather, ocean conditions, or venue availability. Any offer of free visits applies as described on the relevant chapter page and may be limited by capacity, or changed or withdrawn at any time.
Before you take part in certain activities, you may be asked to sign a participation agreement, release, or acknowledgment of risk. That document applies in addition to these terms. We may decline, limit, or end anyone's participation in any activity or chapter where we reasonably believe it is necessary for the safety or wellbeing of that person or others, or where these terms have been breached.
8. Your health and your participation
Many Rebellious Aging activities are physical, including strength training, balance and mobility work, walking, hiking, ocean swimming, yoga, and volunteer work. Physical activity carries inherent risks, including falls, muscle and joint injuries, heat illness, dehydration, strong currents and other ocean hazards, uneven terrain, cardiac events, and in rare cases serious injury or death. These risks exist even when activities are led carefully.
By taking part, you agree that:
- You will talk to your physician before starting any new exercise or activity, particularly if you have a medical condition, take medication, or have recently been ill or injured
- Your participation is voluntary, and you are responsible for deciding whether an activity is suitable for you
- You will take part within your own abilities, use modified versions of exercises where you need them, and stop immediately if you feel pain, dizziness, shortness of breath, or discomfort
- You will tell the session leader about anything that could affect your safety, to the extent you are comfortable doing so
- You are responsible for assessing trail, weather, and ocean conditions for yourself, and ocean activities are not supervised by lifeguards unless a session description clearly states otherwise
- Coaches, chapter leads, and volunteers are not providing medical care and are not responsible for monitoring your health
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, you knowingly assume the risks of taking part in Rebellious Aging activities.
9. Food at gatherings
Food at kitchen salons, potlucks, and other gatherings may be prepared by members, volunteers, or guests, including in home kitchens. We cannot guarantee how any food was prepared, what it contains, or that it is free of allergens such as nuts, shellfish, dairy, gluten, or eggs. If you have a food allergy or dietary restriction, you are responsible for deciding what is safe for you to eat. Information about nutrition is general education and is not individual dietary advice.
10. Volunteer and service activities
Some chapters take part in service activities organized with or by third parties, such as beach cleanups and meal delivery programs. Those organizations may have their own requirements, rules, and waivers, which you agree to follow. We are not responsible for the acts, omissions, or policies of those organizations.
11. Community conduct
Rebellious Aging depends on members treating each other with respect. When you take part in any chapter, session, or online space connected to Rebellious Aging, you agree not to:
- Harass, threaten, demean, or discriminate against any member, guest, volunteer, or speaker
- Share personal or health information another person has shared in a session without their permission
- Sell, promote, or solicit products, services, or investments to members
- Present yourself as giving professional medical, legal, or financial advice unless you are appropriately licensed and the setting clearly allows it
- Attend while impaired in a way that puts yourself or others at risk
We and our chapter leads may remove anyone from a session, chapter, or online space for conduct that breaches these terms.
12. Photographs and recordings
Sessions, lectures, and gatherings may be photographed, filmed, or recorded, and those materials may be used on this website, in podcasts, and in other Rebellious Aging materials. If you do not want to appear in photographs or recordings, tell the session leader before the session begins, and we will make reasonable efforts to respect your request. Where required, we will ask for your permission before featuring you by name.
13. Lectures and educational content
Lecturers, moderators, and guest speakers are independent. Their views are their own and do not necessarily reflect ours. References to research, trials, and published studies are provided for education and discussion, and research findings may not apply to your individual circumstances. Session summaries and recordings may be edited for length and clarity.
14. Starting a chapter
Submitting an application or inquiry about starting a chapter does not create a chapter, an affiliation, a partnership, or any right to use the Rebellious Aging name, materials, or support. A chapter is established only under a separate written agreement signed by us.
15. Membership and dues
Where a chapter charges membership dues, the amount, frequency, and payment method will be disclosed to you before you join. If dues renew automatically, we will tell you before you join and you may cancel at any time using the method described in your membership terms, effective at the end of the current period. Except where stated in your membership terms or required by law, dues already paid are not refundable.
16. Books and other products
Books and related products may be sold through third-party publishers and retailers, including Lulu. Purchases made through those services are governed by their terms, including their pricing, payment, shipping, and return policies, and we are not responsible for their fulfillment. Where we sell products directly, the price, availability, and any shipping and return terms will be shown before you complete your purchase. Product descriptions are general and may contain errors, and prices and availability may change without notice.
17. Forms and submissions
When you submit a form on this website, such as a first-visit booking, a waitlist request, a chapter application, or a general inquiry, you are asking us to contact you, and you agree that we or the relevant chapter lead may respond by email, phone, or text using the details you provide. Please do not submit detailed medical information, medical records, payment details, or confidential documents through the site. Information you send us is handled as described in ourPrivacy Policy.
18. Text messages
If you provide a mobile number and opt in, we or your chapter may send text messages about your inquiry, visit, or chapter activities. Message and data rates may apply, and message frequency varies. Reply STOP to any message to opt out, or HELP for assistance. Consent to receive text messages is not a condition of joining a chapter or making any purchase.
19. Third-party links and embedded content
This website may link to, or embed content from, third-party services such as Athena Clinic, publishers and retailers, podcast platforms, maps, and video services. We do not control those services and are not responsible for their content, availability, accuracy, fees, or privacy practices. Your use of a third-party service is governed by that provider's own terms.
20. Cookies
This website may use cookies and similar technologies to operate the site and understand how it is used. You can control cookies through your browser settings. See ourPrivacy Policy for more detail, including how the self-assessment is handled.
21. Intellectual property
Unless stated otherwise, the content on this website and in Rebellious Aging materials, including text, frameworks, the self-assessment, images, graphics, recordings, layout, and design, is owned by Rebellious Aging, Dr. Robert Peterson, or our licensors, and is protected by copyright and other intellectual property laws. You may view, print, and save pages and your own self-assessment results for personal, non-commercial use. You may not reproduce, distribute, modify, sell, or create derivative works from this content, or use it to run programs, classes, or groups of your own, without our written permission.
Third-party names, trademarks, and logos, including those of research institutions, publishers, and service organizations, remain the property of their respective owners and are used only to identify them.
22. Copyright complaints
If you believe content on this website infringes your copyright, contact us with a description of the work, the location of the material on our site, your contact details, a statement that you believe the use is unauthorized, and a statement that the information in your notice is accurate. We will review the notice and remove or disable access to the material where appropriate. If material of yours was removed in error, you may contact us at the same address to respond.
23. Disclaimer of warranties
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, this website, its content, the self-assessment, and all Rebellious Aging activities are provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the site will be uninterrupted, secure, or free of errors, or that any information is complete, accurate, or current.
We make no promise of any health outcome. Member stories and testimonials describe individual experiences, are not typical or guaranteed results, and your results may differ.
24. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Rebellious Aging, Dr. Robert Peterson, and our owners, employees, chapter leads, coaches, volunteers, and speakers will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, revenue, data, or goodwill, arising out of or relating to your use of this website, the self-assessment, or your participation in Rebellious Aging activities. Where liability cannot be excluded, our total liability relating to this website is limited to one hundred United States dollars (USD 100).
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability that cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law, including liability for gross negligence or willful misconduct. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations of liability, so parts of this section may not apply to you.
25. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Rebellious Aging, Dr. Robert Peterson, and our owners, employees, chapter leads, coaches, volunteers, and speakers from any claims, losses, liabilities, and reasonable legal fees arising from your misuse of this website, your conduct at any Rebellious Aging activity, or your breach of these terms.
26. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. The current version is always posted on this page with its effective date. Continued use of the site or participation in our activities after an update means you accept the revised terms.
27. Governing law and venue
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Hawaii, without regard to its conflict of laws rules. Any dispute relating to these terms, this website, or Rebellious Aging activities will be brought in the state or federal courts located in Honolulu County, Hawaii, and you consent to the jurisdiction of those courts.
28. General
If any provision of these terms is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions stay in effect. Our failure to enforce any provision is not a waiver of it. These terms, together with any participation agreement, membership terms, or other written agreement between us, form the entire agreement regarding their subject matter. Where a signed agreement conflicts with these terms, the signed agreement controls.
